Pith
Solo exhibition at Caloundra Regional Gallery, Queensland
15 Nov – 12 Jan 2019
Curated by Hamish Sawyer
Through her research driven, multi-sensory practice encompassing installation, sculpture, collage, video, drawing and performance, Elizabeth Willing explores the history, production and consumption of food. For this exhibition, Willing considers her own memories and experiences of food and agricultural production as a child growing up in the Sunshine Coast hinterland:
“I am trying to think about my relationship (a female body and as a child growing up on this site) to the land and the food that grows on it. This opens up a space to consider my memories and experiences exploring the land and the agriculture that covers it.”
Focusing on the interconnected relationship between the body, land and food, Willing seeks to develop objects and images that relate to the natural fertility and productivity of the human body and the landscape. Pith features newly commissioned works by Willing in a range of media that prompt viewers to contemplate their own relationship with the food they eat, where it comes from and how their own eating habits impact on the land which produces it.
