Allogenic, studio, 2023

Allogenic

Installed at MAVA Pathfinders studio 2023

The sculpture is inspired by carvings of ribbon in historical baroque plasterwork that I observed in palaces throughout Germany. When isolated from their decorative context, these ribbon carvings have a strong resonance with the flaccid, plasticised intestine, like the contemporary fossils that one finds in a biological museum. Allogenic brings together architectural design and ornamentation, with the architecture of the body; the bruise-coloured ribbons reading like the sinews, muscles, and arteries which feed, and feed-off, the intestine rhizome. Allogenic references the non/functional alimentary canal, the internal architecture that filters our technologically driven diet.
